Event spaces become Bangkok’s mall new engine of attraction
September 29, 2026 / By Tassaporn Sukhumdhanakul
In Bangkok, in-mall event spaces have become one of the retail industry’s most significant experiments. Malls deploy these areas to capture crowds, hoping visitor spending spills into stores while generating incremental leasing revenue. This contrasts with standalone MICE venues, where space leasing is the primary source of income and retail serves merely as a supporting function. That boundary is gradually dissolving as new regional malls embed large-scale event spaces, most notably full convention halls, as anchors to claim ‘destination’ status.
Local mall operators have developed a clear hierarchy of event spaces suited to different commercial ambitions:
- Central atriums, ranging from 300 to 1,500 sqm, at the retail core typically host two to three high-profile product launches or fan meetings monthly.
- Pop-up spaces, between 50 and 300 sqm, are scattered across floors and rotate promotional activities frequently, collectively producing a rhythm of micro activations.
- Event halls, ranging from 2,200 to 5,100 sqm, on upper floors of newer malls such as SCBX Next Tech’s amphitheatre at Siam Paragon for tech-forward seminars, curated exhibition halls at CentralWorld Pulse at 2,257 sqm and ICONSIAM Attraction Hall, at 4,120 sqm, which hosts monthly immersive exhibitions.

Specialty venues regularly host one event per month, while event halls average two to four. Event frequency peaks seasonally, reaching its highest in October as malls prepare for year-end festivities with holiday product launches. This momentum continues through New Year before slowing in January, then accelerates again during May to June summer holidays with family-oriented events. These rhythms create a dynamic atmosphere that boosts footfall before underpinning full future integration between the retail and MICE sectors.

These event spaces have evolved beyond temporary promotional pop-ups into primary attractions. City-centre malls heavily leverage pop culture to drive this shift. According to developer projections, CentralWorld’s annual themed Christmas celebrations under licensed franchises like Pokémon and Disney lifted festive traffic by 25–30% month-on-month. The twelve-day ‘GMMTV Fanival 2026’ attracts over 7,500 T-pop fans daily based on CentralWorld Pulse full capacity, with an average of three slots per day. Suburban malls, which struggle with premium product launches, tap into the same T-pop wave. The Mall Group’s mascot-driven ‘House of Friends’ campaign boosted footfall by 15% year-on-year.
Meanwhile, Seacon Group has pushed this model furthest. By self-curating bi-weekly immersive events year-round, ranging from trending sports activities and pet expos to haunted houses and experiential explorations. Seacon Group secures recurring visits from loyal audiences and generates direct ticketed revenue. This transforms event spaces into self-sustaining footfall generators and destinations rather than supporting functions, marking a significant shift in mall programming.
The ultimate ambitious experiment is underway. Opening in 2028, Bangkok Mall will anchor its complex with the 18,000-seat Bangkok Arena, illustrating how far shopping centres can push towards spectacle. Yet, most malls may never match this scale, nor do they need to. The real question remains whether high-effort event spaces will deliver genuine, long-term retail value, or whether success may depends on tying every activation to spending campaigns and fast-moving pop culture to remain dynamic and relevant in this evolving market.
